Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

So we are wrapping up our time in STL and decided to check out Gioa's on the hill as we had heard so much about this joint. This is a neighborhood deli serving up some delicious Italian subs including salamis sandwiches, meatball subs, clubs, etc. It is a smaller joint with roughly 5 or 6 tables and plenty of parking outside on the street. You cannot miss this joint as you drive by because there is a picture of a huge sub outside on its wall. We walk into the joint and after a few minutes perusing through the list I know I have to go with the apparent "St Louis Favorite" Gioa's Hot Salami. The people working behind the counter are very friendly and they were patient with us even though this was our first time perusing and ordering the menu. Keep it simple and get it on a 9" with mustard, pepper jack, and peppers. They sure do not skimp on portions here and it is legit Salami that comes out on the bread. They slice it for you fresh right there basically cut into salami patties. This sandwich is killer in every sense possible. It will probably kill you through a heart attack but just kills your taste buds with delicious flavors. The bread is very soft and the combination of all the flavors is just amazing along with the salami just melting in your mouth. Absolutely delicious so I suggest you get to the Hill soon!

I love the hot salami. It is delicious ans usually what I order almost every time. But when I want something else I get the bbq beef. Their beef is very good and adding sauce to it only makes it better. The people here want to make you happy. You can have your sandwich any way you want it.

This is based on the truck that's parked downtown on Fridays, not on the deli location. Anyway, I LOVE sandwiches, but, after today, the Spicy Daggett with provel and spicy mustard provides the new gold standard for great deli sandwiches. It was so good that I'm not sure I'll get around to trying the others on the menu. Hot salami, hot coppa, and capicola topped with giardiniera, all on the garlic bread. This is a BIG sandwich--indulgent, but not overly rich. Lots of meat, a nice kick from the peppers, and the provel softens the punch so perfectly. Wow.

FINALLY was able to try Gioia's Deli yesterday thanks to their awesome "Summer Nights" idea. Basically, every Thursday during the summer they stay open until 8 PM, which is fantastic. I absolutely love sandwich shops....and am always so sad about the fact that most of them usually close before 6 PM. Not during the summer on Thursdays at Gioia's! When we arrived, the place had tons of people sitting outside enjoying some yummy sandwiches, which is a great sign. My sister and I ordered the tuna salad. We were able to get it toasted on garlic cheese bread. Honestly, it was one of the best tuna salads I've had (although I was pretty hungry). It had the perfect amount of tuna and it went great with the bread. They have several cheeses to choose from, but I would recommend getting swiss if you go with the tuna salad. I then got a fountain drink and some billy goat chips. They also have bottled beverages (such as Fitz's soda) and several different kinds of chips to choose from. I'd say what is preventing me from giving this place 5 stars is the price. The drink, chips, and sandwich (9 inch) were $15 (the sandwich itself was $9). They have tons of patio options which is nice, and they have a few tables inside as well. Last night they had some guest brewers, which was pretty cool too. In sum, if you're looking for a sandwich (especially during the evening on a Thursday), you should definitely check out Gioia's!

I dropped in here after the Yelp Coffee School at Park Avenue Coffee -- The Hill on February 28. Great parking spot right out front. The place was packed. I got in line, but it took a couple minutes to find the line. Once that was established, we all moved forward. They've got a lot of local carbonated beverages in a chill case. As well as a fountain for beverages. Five tables, mostly for four. Some for two. I got the hot salami and roast beef sandwich ($9). Asked for provolone. They didn't have that, so offered provel. I accepted. The sandwich was great when I ate the first half. Second half, not so much. I ditched it. This is not something I do lightly. I don't like to waste food. I just could not eat that second meal of a half sandwich, even heated up.
(3)Norel P.
Don't be mislead by the looks. Forget the menu you want the hot salami (hot because it's just off the stove). The bread is fantastic grab some chips and a soda. The sandwich is so large I would recommend taking half home. Other people make them but nobody is close to this place.
(5)Jen J.
Gioia's is by far my favorite Italian sandwich place in St. Louis. There is not an item on the menu that I don't like. My favorite is the Spicy Daggett that is basically a cured Italian meats overload, with hot salami, hot Coppa and Capicolla topped with Giardiniera. Just typing this out is making my mouth water. Come here for lunch and grab a sandwich to go. Your taste buds will thank you all afternoon at work.
(5)Missy A.
One of the best sandwiches in town! The hot salami and roast beef on cheese garlic bread was amazing!
(5)Chris N.
Very busy at lunch on a Saturday, but worth the fairly short wait. Plenty of room to sit outside on a nice day. Small gripe about 2 people who weren't customers just kind of wandering around, but did not detract from our amazing time and meal. Will go back :)
(5)Joe G.
Such a great little hole in the wall deli. Everything is fresh and delicious. Outside seating, as well as inside, and dog-friendly! Give 'em a try and you won't be disappointed!
(4)Michelle B.
Loved the hot salami sandwich! Small crowded space. Outdoor seating available. Love to go back!
(5)Daniel J.
I actually ate from the food truck which was one of my first food truck experiences here in St. Louis and it didn't disappoint! I ended up having the Porknado sandwich was fantastic! I would eat it again and suggest it to others, my friend got their roast beef which he said was ok.
(3)Carol C.
Very good sammy... I had the Italian Trio and it was awesome. I added some condiments and those hot peppers! I went with a group so I was able to take a bite out of everyone's sandwich. Hot Salami & Roast Beef - Pretty good sammy. It wasn't on garlic cheese bread but it was still good. Porknado - I'm not a big pork person but it was still good. Right amount of all 3 meats. Gioia's Hot Salami - Thick, generous cut of salami. I can see why it's the fave sammy in STL. This is where the $ is at~ I'll order this next time. Sammies are a good size. 9in so it's not like subway sammies where you take 3 bites and you're done with your sandwich. Also, I'm a huge fan of spicy food so my fave part was the variety of burn your face off hot sauce you can put on your sammy.
(4)Ben C.
Best sandwich in town, hands down. I'd recommend the Porknado 2 if you like a little spice.
(5)Marybeth G.
Great sandwiches on fresh bread, lots of choices hot and cold. Line moves fairly fast, not a lot of seating inside but they have tables out side and a small park in across the street. Been here a few times and will come again.
(4)Brandon T.
I'm actually a bigger fan of the truck than I am the brick-and-mortar deli (service at the brick-and-mortar can be bad and very unfriendly depending on who is serving you), and thats the only reason the rating is a 3 and not a 5, because the food is always dynamite! I will revise/edit this review and I really hope that will be needed because I love the food here but the service can be really bad and some of the people working there can be very rude to those they may think are out-of-place in, or not of the neighborhood. Totally different experience from the food truck crew though, food is just as good and they are always friendly and accommodating. I know there aren't many 3 star reviews for Gioia's but as popular as they have become and as many new people are now finding their way to their door, I seriously doubt I am the only one that has noticed this ripple in their service and almost xenophobic attitude of some of the employees.
(3)Papa H.
Someone either brought you here or gave you directions. They knew you couldn't go wrong getting a sandwich at this deli!!! OMGosh, the Hot Salami literally melts in your mouth! Must get the garlic butter on the bread. If I could give this sandwich a 7, I would! I may not be able to pronounce "The Hill" properly, but this Okie knows where to come for great food. Had zero problems either parking on street or finding a stool to eat on. Staff gets a 7, too. The girls were slinging sandwiches as fast as necessary. Very little wait for the Delicous Hot Salami Sandwich!!!
(5)Kathy M.
When we walked in, I was all set to order one of their specialty sandwiches, but after seeing the size of their sandwiches, I changed my mind. I decided to try a salad and sample some of the other sandwiches at our table. I really enjoyed my salad - it was very fresh with lots of toppings! Sarah had the hot salami with spicy mustard and hubby had the meatball sandwich. Everyone liked the bread and how it didn't overwhelm the sandwich. Prices were average and the staff was very friendly. Menu didn't seem as varied as some other delis, but the quality was good.
(4)Erica S.
We always get the spicy daggett and original hot salami! It was one of the first places my boyfriend took me when I said I wanted to try out the Hill a few years ago. Anyone u ask recommends this place !
(4)Matthew B.
Nice old school sandwich/deli shop on the hill. I like the local support in regards to supporting farmers. The atmosphere is very friendly and the workers are very helpful in suggesting food ideas. You looking for solid sandwich check this place out.
(4)Cary C.
I've been coming her for 25 years and it keeps getting better. Get the Hot Salami on something!!!
(4)Mandy H.
We were looking for a good lunch spot in The Hill and found this place through Yelp. It was awesome! We had the Porknado and the Italian Trio. Big sandwiches that are great for sharing, and were also good as leftovers the next day. We also had the homemade mac & cheese which we recommend. Will go back!
(4)Cheyanne D.
This place is an absolute gem! The food is really delicious and staff is really friendly and fast. Love the old school Italian deli feel. I see a lot of samdwichs from this place in our future
(5)Mark S.
Awe-inspiring. These sandwiches are exquisite. Enormous. I tried the Spicy Dagget-hot salami, some other spicy meats, pepper jack, spicy giardinieri, and pepporcinis. It was so good. Incredibly heavy, but if you're going for an Italian sub, you'd probably expect that. I'm fairly certain my entire table took a nap after this meal. They have an assortment of special sodas-pineapple, sasparilla, etc. And they also serve local baked goods. Service was friendly and the line moved quickly. There's ample seating outside or at Berra Park across the street.
(5)Anthony A.
Great sandwich place located in the center of The Hill. They have a wonderful social marketing program. Once a week I am emailed with secret words for discounts and today there was a whole secret menu. The hot salami sandwich was featured on Food Network. It's great on garlic cheese bread. The line gets long at lunch but the staff keep everything rolling. Outdoor seating is available in the warm weather. The parking is street side, but I've never had a problem. Red hot ripplet s are on the shelf.. grab a bag.
(4)Greg K.
Make sure you schedule a nap for yourself when your done. The sandwiches are big and the staff is generous with the portions. The Hot Salami is amazing and good no matter how you top it.
(5)Brad B.
Plain and simple , great Italian sandwiches. Loved it. In the heart of The Hill......traditions deli. Order anything and you won't be disappointed. We sampled a couple sandwiches and they were all excellent, son had a meatball that was amazing. Big lines during lunch but it moves well. Limited seating
(5)April J.
The toasted hot salami sandwich on wheat with green peppers and jalapeños is so good!!
(4)Jason B.
Hot salami with garlic cheese bread, spicy mustard and pepperoncinis, An excellent sandwich --- don't even ask questions, just get it and trust me!
(5)Vincent Y.
Wow try a bite of the spicy dagget, and you'll be challenged to fit it into your mouth. This sandwich is stacked so tall and weighs almost a pound that you'll be pondering the true definition of excess. There is so much meat and sodium that within an hour or two, you'll be needing lots of water. Good stuff, though!
(4)Bill A.
Some of the best food up on the hill Great food, great service and always great personal greetings from the owner ! The new food truck rocks to keep up the good work !!!
(5)Stanley W.
The BEST place for a sandwich!! I love this place...the Salami is fantastic. Try the veggie sandwich you will love it, vegetarian or not.
(5)Jeffrey Z.
I've always heard great things about the hill but in the back of my mind pictured it as over rated. Went here on recommendation visiting a house in walking distance. The line was to the door but moved extremely fast. Ordered the hot salami and roast beef.... AMAZING. Incredible, out of this world. Here's my tip, this place is so good, don't just get a 9 inch of what you want, order two 4 inchers for the variety. Their cold tortellini salad...I could eat a pound of that, it is amazing. If I'm in the area, I will be visiting this place again, and again, and again. Extremely thankful for the recommendation. Don't get it to go, eat it there. They also have cheesy franks chips, man I could buy a big bag of them, they have a great kick to them. Try it, I hope you like it. I loved it. 2nd tip, don't get fancy on your first order, just start simple, you'll be back, you'll get better at ordering because you will return. Yes, they take plastic.
(5)Roman S.
Indeed, the hot salami sandwich is great. Consider sharing it or getting a half size (I think that was an option), unless of course you have self-control and save some for later. Or you are one of the well-sized contractors that stop by and don't sit behind the desk all day. Also consider to request light buttering/oil, they dip the bread upon request, but I would go lightly. You need it to make the bread less dry, but you don't want it to be too fatty/dripping.
(4)Alex L.
I was just thinking about all the best sandwiches I've had around the United States and this is one of those places you have to stop at and get a Hot Salami Sandwich. I can't think of any place that does it better, and it's the first place I hit up when I'm back home in the STL. Not to mention, I love the Neighborhood. When I'm at this amazing little joint I get the Hot Salami & Roast Beef on their Garlic Cheese Bread (such a steal for an extra dollar) with the WORKS. You won't regret it. Get it. Staff is friendly and fun, too. The place is really an experience.
(5)Kevin D.
Wow. Just had my first Gioias Deli hot salami sandwich. I think it might be the best sandwich in St. Louis. Almost as good as a Katz's pastrami. I didn't think I'd like the salami (I'm only used to Jewish style salami) but this incredible. Can't wait to go back.
(5)Anthony R.
Gioia's is OUTSTANDING! If you find yourself craving a delicious Italian Sandwich, look no further than Gioia's Deli at Macklind and Dagget in the heart of The Hill. The employees are very friendly and they take pride in creating sandwich art; usually centered around their famous Hot Salami. I've had the Meatball, Salsiccia, Italian Trio, Porknado, Hot Salami, and "The Spaceball"...each and every time I have been completely satisfied and I keep going back for more. This place tends to fill up during the lunch hour so be prepared to wait in line, but as so many have already said..."Its worth the wait".
(5)Christian K.
Yelp 100 Challenge Complete! At the beginner of the year, I took a pledge to write 100 reviews by the end of 2013. I didn't want to wasted #100 on just any establishment, so I chose Gioia's to complete my task! And what a great choice, too. Gioia's has been on Da List for quite some time. I am a sucker for a good deli, but I don't get to branch out as often as I would like, especially living down the street from Blues City Deli. However, I knew that the time was right to explore Gioia's when it gained national attention from Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmern. When he introduced Gioia's signature sandwich, The Hot Salami, my mind would not rest until that Sammy was in my tummy! As soon as I could escape my daily hub bub, I raced to Gioia's. Surprisingly, they weren't too busy that day. However, people were surrounding the counter where the workers were taking orders and assembling sandwiches. I went with the classic hot salami, and I got to choose all my options: bread, cheese, meat, and toppings. Once the clerk stacked it and wrapped it, I was at the register and paying. I was going to take it home, but after watching the sandwich's construction, I knew that my buds couldn't wait any longer. I had to have that Sammy! Without drink, I tore into the wrapper and began to devour that hot salami. Let me tell you. It was unlike any salami sandwich that I'd ever tasted. The meat was so tender that it just melted in my mouth. It almost had the consistency of corned beef, but the meat was even more tender. Within moments, the sandwich was gone, but Gioia's had one over another customer. Why are you still reading this? Turn off your computer. Put down your phone. Get on your bad motorscooter and ride to Gioia's Deli! That's 100 reviews, baby!
(5)Karen B.
Awesome neighborhood deli! We stopped in for a quick bite in The Hill area. Had 3 kids with us and sat on the stools at the window. Everything was delicious and everyone was so kind. Paleo/Primal tip: order the large salad - lots of meat and cheese
(5)Brooke T.
I honestly can't understand giving this place anything less than 5 stars. I've been here multiple times and it is amazing every single time. Highly highly highly recommend the hot salami. It's phenomenal! You can count on me being back many times in the future. My only complaint is that I think the staff could be friendlier. By no means are they unpleasant, but they don't really go above and beyond to make my visit memorable. I think it's worth mentioning that I did have exceptional service from a gentleman one time, but it's not consistent. I'm definitely making the trip because of the food, not the service.
(5)John H.
Sure, I like meatballs. Meatballs are good. Just not on the bottom of the whole wheat roll of my non-meatball sandwich. There are a lot of things to like about G's: easy parking on Macklind (rather than on Shaw or its tributaries, like at Adriana's) and Berra Park right across the street. But that partial meatball stuck to the bottom of my bread just isn't right. There were only a couple of parties in front and behind me, so not an incredible rush of business to contend with. How hard can it be to wipe off the cutting board / food prep surface before making my sandwich? And if the meatballs aren't wiped off, who knows what else may be lurking?
(2)Andrew T.
At the recommendation of some friends, we stopped by on the way out of town. Definitely a spot worth trying. I was told to just get something with the hot salami (temperature hot, not spicy hot) and went with the Italian Trio, which was the aforementioned hot salami, plus mortadella and Genoa salami, all on cheese bread. Heart attack, here I come. The hot salami was thick sliced, and was pretty mild, aside from plenty of garlic. But I liked the thick slices. Because it was mild, I might have lost it a little in the other meats or the cheese bread, so I think next time I might just get the hot salami to try it more accurately. However, it was still a pretty good sandwich. Very large helping, so honestly, don't bother with a bag of chips, because you're really not going to need it. And mind was toasted, which I think I would stick with if I was to do it over. My parents still live in St. Louis, so would I tell them go here? Well, I can't say they should drop everything and get in the car. But if they're in the area and looking for something new to try, I would also say it's worth stopping in. The staff are friendly, the sandwiches are good, and the price isn't going to break the bank. Of note - they don't have provolone cheese. They have provel. Those...are not the same. I may have spent 10 years in St. Louis, but the culinary abomination that is provel (I can't call it cheese because it isn't) is not going to come anywhere near my sandwich.
(3)Brett C.
The Spicy Daggett is where it's at. This has become my favorite sandwich ever -- it is essentially the Hot Salami but with super spicy giardiniera, hot coppa and capicola. Add that it's on garlic cheese bread, and it's sealed. Toss some horsey mayo, all the garnishes and it's a killer sandwich. Recently tried the Firecracker as well. They just started using Sriracha in a limited capacity, so I naturally had to try it. Pretty good, but a little overwhelmingly spicy. Join their e-mail club and get the word of the week for a $1 off. I still feel like an idiot just saying things at the register, but it is worth it. Also, their staff is always super friendly. My only gripe is that I wish they would mix up their food truck schedule a bit more. Or do an every-other-week rotation. I work in Dutchtown -- while I can probably get there and back to my office in thirty minutes, it usually is more along the lines of 45 minutes because of crazy lunch traffic. It'd be great to get it parked at Tower Grove Park or something one lunch rush out of the month. I genuinely feel sorry for anyone that still orders Subway when you have this in your town. Seriously, what are you doing?
(5)Bob D.
If you like Italian sandwiches, you need to go here and order one. If you don't like Italian sandwiches, please reevaluate your life. I recommend something with the hot salami on the garlic cheese bread, add the spicy giardinera.. it's the best. Very limited seating but it's great to go.
(5)Jim V.
Fiirst time here. Ordered the philly with provel instead of cream cheese and was charged an additional .50. On their menu (step 2) it lists provel and cream cheese. I would think it would be the same cost, if not they need to tell the customer. Also, asked for mayo and did not receive. Sandwich was good but only 3 stars, not the friendliest deli on the hill.
(3)John K.
I had a blind date the other day at Gioia's Deli. So who did I bring? You sure are being nosy! Her name was the hot salami. She sure was pretty, and yes we did make out. She was a simple gal. Wheat bread, pepper jack cheese, pepperoncinis, and spicy mustard. I may even consider bringing her home to meet Mom, that is if I don't eat her first. All kidding aside, Gioia's represents The Hill in prototype fashion. Their thick cut salami is first class. The limited seating inside fits with the program. It is a no frills type of place, where you cut to the chase and belly up to the counter. There really is no hesitation needed. Tell the friendly gals making the sandwiches you want the hot salami on either 7" or 9", add on whatever it is that suits your taste, check out, and enjoy. Simplicity at it's finest and I thank the great people at Gioia's for making it just that.
(4)Kortney K.
Best Italian sandwiches EVER! And the owners are extremely friendly! Top that with speedy service and it's impossible to pass up!
(5)Nate M.
Magical. Just magical. I am dumbfounded that anyone gives this anything other than 5 stars. My only complaints are that they are closed on Mondays and never open on the evenings. The staff is extremely, extremely nice and friendly. The sandwiches are...magnificent. Anytime we have someone from out or town, we take em to Gioia's. My favorites are the Hot Salami on garlic cheese bread & the Spicy Daggett. Pro-tip: If you show up JUST before they close, they often load your sandwich up like crazy because it is the end of the day. Last time we were in, we arrived 10 minutes before close. Fearing that we would annoy them we asked if it would be ok if we ordered. They were extremely welcoming and even said we were more than welcome to stay and eat while they cleaned up. The sandwiches they gave us were comically large and was honestly the best I have had. Can't say enough about this place. Everyone we bring here, RAVES about it - but you have to get something with hot salami on it! I have been to the other delis in town, and Gioia's is incomparable - totally unique and on an entirely different level of delicious.
(5)Nicole S.
This place is so good and so affordable. The cheese steak was so yummy. Brought all my family here when they were in town and they loved it!
(5)Matt M.
Best toasted sandwich. The Hot salami is one of the best things I have ever tasted. The garlic cheese bread really makes the sandwich as well. I will 100% be going back for another sandwich.
(5)Tabitha R.
We Love this deli! My husband and I used them to cater to part of our rehearsal dinner, along with other St Louis local places. We always go there for 'special' occasions- like birthdays and anniversaries! The best part, they remember us! and it's been almost 5 years since we started eating there:) what a great find! Super nice and helpful staff! They also carry Sarsaparilla Root Beer!! my Favorite! love, love, love this place! We ALWAYS get the Italian Trio!
(5)Aspin H.
If any of you are any kind of familar with my reviews, you know that I prefer to write them food still fresh in mah bellllyyyyy.... Well today is Monday--and just as I was getting ready to head over to Russells on Macklind, I stumbled across Steven B's review stating they are closed on Mondays.. Okayyyyy then, moving on I said to myself-- I had narrowed down my two choices to Gioia's and Adrianas- I chose Gioias based on the fact that I had seen it on the Travel Channel (HOWEVER, I do plan to make it over to Adrianas) but that day was not today. I arrived about 12:30ish so I believe I beat the early eaters, and there was only two girls ahead of me at the counter finishing up their orders. After a quick glance at the board, and reading reviews on here, I decided on the hot (temperature wise, not spicy wise) salami sammich.. I ordered the smaller version, with lettuce, pickle, jalapeno, provel cheese, and vinegar and oil on wheat bread.... I was so excited for this sandwich~!!! I also grabbed a bag of Billy Goat chips ((yummmmmmmmmm)) then headed to the cashier-- My total was $10.30 which i thougth was reasonable for a big bag of chips, and the sandwich (no more than what you would pay anywhere else). I got back to work, opened up the wrapper, and ((cue the hallelujuah music)--- ahhh there it was.... This sandwich was DELICIOUS..!!!! to the core!!!!! I've never had "hot" salami, and was extremely pleased with my experience here-- nothing fancy by anymeans (Decor wise) but I will definitely be returning!!!! Gioias has just gained another loyal customer! :)
(5)Angela S.
It's just so good. If I'm going to the Hill to get a sandwich, I'm going to Gioia's. Yeah, it gets packed at lunch time. Go a little early and beat the rush. Several things going for this place: 1. Everyone is super friendly. 2. The bread is awesome. You don't chip your tooth on it like some other nearby establishments (I'm not naming names but it rhymes with Smamighetti's) 3. They serve many of their sandwiches on cheese garlic bread. I realize other places do this, but stop to think about it for a minute. Your sandwich. Is served on cheese garlic bread. Instead of not cheese garlic bread. Do you realize how good we have it, America? 4. Red Hot Riplets. Multiple varieties. YES. I appreciate any establishment that not only carries the Red Hot Riplet, but celebrates its many incarnations. A tip for the fellas: if you're ever reaching for a good date idea, take your lady here, get a couple of Fitz's out of the drink case and eat lunch in the park across the street. If she's not impressed by how awesome you are and how awesome Gioia's is -- it's over man. Let her go.
(4)Matt S.
STOP THE PRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been on such a huge Mama Toscano kick lately that I have abandoned one of my favorite places. I came to Gioia's today to pick up a Hot Salami - consistently one of the best sandwiches in the city. As I walk up to the counter I see the special. The Spicy Daggett - Gioia's Salami, Volpi Hot Coppa, Cappicola, Pepper Jack Cheese, Giardinara served on garlic cheese bread - $7.50 Oh my god. This thing was fantastic. There is a reason this place has been around for years - adding this sando puts it over-the-top. Awesome - just make sure you have something cold to drink, because it packs some heat.

Came in here over the weekend for a sandwich and some chili. (This one's for you, Andrew Zimmern...). I'd seen pictures of Gioia's, but had never been there before. It's situated on an unobtrusive corner in The Hill. The day we were there, there were folks across the street putting up Christmas decorations in Berra Park. When we walked in, it wasn't terribly busy -- probably because it was well after the lunch rush and now mid-afternoon. The process is pretty simple. Walk straight in and head for the counter in the back. Pick your sandwich, have the nice folks make it for you, then head for the cash register and check out. I had heard a lot about the Hot Salami (...go ahead, insert jokes here...) at Gioia's and knew that that was I wanted. I got the half-sandwich and chili. The bread was outstanding -- seeded french. The salami wasn't terribly spicy-hot, but it was temperature hot, with Provel melted on it. Provel goes very well with Hot Salami! Threw some pickles, onions, and lettuce, and we had a sandwich! Now on to the chili...let me just say that I love the fall, and I do love my chili. Generally, in the Midwest, during the fall, you'll see more restaurants offer chili -- the hearty goodness "stick-to-yow-ribs" necessity as the temperature changes from warm to icy. Gioia's chili is no exception to hearty goodness. It was delicious. The meat had a nice heat to it that made it enjoyable (if you're into spicy hot food). The sauce was nice and flavorful. I wish I had a second bowl! All this was washed down by an ice-cold Empire Root Beer, which was good considering the fact that it was incredibly warm inside the deli for some reason. Memorable, delicious, and so worth it on a Saturday afternoon. Glad we went!

Gioia's is a pro at what they do. Service is fantastic, and the sandwiches are some of the best you'll have. I can't bring myself to get anything except the Italian Trio (Mortedella, Genova, Hot Salami, with pepperoncini's, onions and oil and vinegar on garlic cheese bread) because it's my favorite sandwich I've ever had. Sandwiches are $7-8 and are pretty big -- definitely a hearty lunch. Only complaint -- closed on Sundays. Definitely a must try!! Pros: unique deli (hot salami), best sandwiches, friendly service, good amount of outdoor/indoor seating. Cons: closed on sundays

Seriously though, the hot salami is probably the best deli sandwich I've found. I don't get to visit as often as I'd like, but when I do it's nothing short of amazing! I often find myself trying to plan my day and deliveries around whether or not I can squeeze a Gioi's trip in. Now that they have the food truck circulating, I'll be watching out for closer spots to catch my favorite sandwich. I managed to visit the food truck on the very first day they opened, sorry for me they ran out of salami as I pulled into the parking lot. I guess the saying "if you snooze you lose" directly applies to the hot salami, so don't be showing up late like me or you'll miss out on the best menu item.

Have to get the hot salami. Also the mac n cheese is killer.

I read all the reviews about the "hot salami" sandwich and how it's a St. Louis favorite so I added Gioia's to my 2013 Foodie Go To List. I convinced my sister and my Dad to go with me. We have never been to Gioia's, which is crazy since we have patronized so many places on The Hill. The interior is classic old Italian deli, a few tables, rack of chips, coolers of various sodas, counter to order your sandwich, and cashier counter by the door. We all went with the suggested salami sandwich. My sister and I split a 9" hot salami on white baguette (bread is great!), with pepper cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, oil and vinegar. I forgot to add giardinara, but went back and got some ($1.00 extra) and I'm glad I did. The sandwich was good, but not what I call a "must have". The salami is cut thick, it's tender not what you would think of typical salami. Without the giardinara my sister and I thought it would be pretty bland. The sandwich was $7.25 so a great price for two. My dad was not enthused by the sandwich either. He thought it was OK. Our experience was dampened by the fact that when we went is was about 42 outside and alas no tables free inside. So, we bravely took to one of the outside tables and tried our 1st Gioia's sandwiches. We did agree that we would be willing to go back and try another type of sandwich.

Looking for a new deli? You have to give Gioia's a shot. As you walk in there are a few limited tables great for getting cozy with some strangers. Mosey on up to the counter and order up a hot salami. Now before you start saying,"I don't like salami" this isn't your hard salami that you got as a kid in your lunch sack. This is house made, house cased, fresh salami. It's full of flavor, it's served hot (temperature not spice), and the bread is wonderful. I keep it simple with pickles, lettuce and provel. They offer a decent selection of toppings too. Check online for the "not so hidden" hidden menu including the "porknado" which is hot salami, bacon and ham which is in between two pieces of garlic cheese bread. This is one of my favorite spots on the hill to grab a sandwich.

Finally got in there to experience Gioia's firsthand.... still 5 stars all the way. The hot salami on garlic cheese bread is freakin' amazing! Got 2 sandwiches, bag of chips and a couple of Empire sodas, sat outside on their side patio on a gorgeous day enjoying those tasty sandwiches :)
(5)S S.
I was brought here under the premise that this was the best f-ing sandwich in STL. I can see why the majority of patrons would think that! I got the hot salami as recommended, but couldn't take the thick cut of the meat. It reminded me of what the texture of Spam might be. I couldn't finish it. Cute shop with loyal customers for a reason... I'll go back to try something thinly-sliced and see if I can join 'em.

Big G took me here over Labor Day weekend after Becca's game. Hot Salami was outstanding, as good as advertised. Staff was friendly. Service excellent.

Pretty tasty Sammies

This quaint local gem has earned national props for a reason! Located in the heart of the always charming Hill neighborhood, this food is traditional, delicious Italian deli. When you walk in the door, it's like stepping back a couple of generations into one of the many well-kept places on the Hill. It's organized and tidy with an old-school order counter in the back, drink cooler, limited seating, and pay stand on your way out the door. Extras like chips and drinks are limited to the best and most popular with many local options- this isn't a quick shop disguising itself as a deli. Regulars chat up the workers, getting salami to go by the pound. Good idea.... I always just buy the whole sandwich. Speaking of which, the famous hot salami is knock your socks off amazing! The bread is perfect- crusty on the outside, chewy inside. It holds up well to the sandwich, but doesn't overpower the flavors. The salami is plentiful, tender, and flavorful. Toppings are a la carte sandwich basics, so you can dress it as you wish. I did notice a couple of yelpers commenting about the mayonnaise. They have a sweet house mayo that complements spicy dishes well, but they also have regular mayonnaise. That could be a culprit of issues if you get one but were expecting the other..... I have only tried a few other sandwiches since the salami is so good! Their beef is great, and other Italian specialties like mortadella, cappicolla, and coppa are always reliable. There is a choice of sides, pasta salad or potato salad. The potato salad is excellent, the pasta salad just okay. It had red sauce when an oil & vinegar would be a lighter choice. Plus the red sauce is the Saint Louis sweet style, not a fave of mine. With a sandwich and a side, I usually skip chips, but do like dessert! The chocolate chip cookies from nearby Comet Coffee are great, the housemade brownies just so-so. Locally made Dad's oatmeal cookies are another reliable crowd pleaser. The prices are reasonable. While it isn't cheap, you get a big sandwich with a lot of meat. I usually have leftovers, and they do hold up well, not getting soggy like some sandwiches do overnight.

This is my 4th time there. The sandwiches are fantastic, I get the hot roast beef on garlic bread, actually my whole family gets that . We don't do the hot salami anymore (once we learned that it was cured pig head parts) I know I know if it tastes good then who cares?! Right? We'll I couldn't finish it , I was disgusted & wish I never knew what it was. Anyways I almost gave this place 3 stars, all 4 times the service had been blah. Not mean but not friendly either. Yes many are young, and I'm sure could give a rats butt about friendly customer service. 1x the sandwich maker said I wasn't talking to you, another time I had 3 sandwiches, 2 potato salads & chips & didn't get offered a to go bag or checked out pleasantly (hey I just spent 30$ lady) the last time I had the girl making 2 sammis for me, she handed me 1 & said have a good day & left to handle another customer, I called back at her , I ordered 2 sammis , she said 2 yes that's right , it's in the oven still, well don't confuse me by saying have a good day & leaving :(. Moral of story, if ur in the area enjoy, but make no special trips. There's many other great places,

Decided to try this out on Monday while I was waiting for my knives to be sharpened around the corner. I had a decent 6 inch turkey sandwich. Would have liked a few more of the spicy peppers which I paid extra to include. It wasn't mind blowing, but it was above average for a St. Louis sandwich. I'm probably in a minority here, but I thought it almost had too much turkey on it. And I should have asked them to hold the olives as it ended up being a little salty. I tried a sample of the hot salami which was DELICIOUS! I was hoping my boyfriend would order that, but he went with chicken salad. I probably couldn't eat an entire salami sandwich (it was cut thick and sort of greasy), but I would have loved to steal some of his ;)
(3)Luisa C.
This is the kind of place that is undeniably great. Here you will see construction workers, police men, bossy grandmas, pregnant ladies with a craving, teenagers, you name it! It feels like the whole town is stopping by! The amazing part is how quick and friendly the service continues to be. It doesn't have that "hi! *smile* we're popular so hurry up and order quickly" vibe. We were offered samples when we weren't sure what to order. We were given directions when we asked the cashier. The best part is, we had INCREDIBLE, fresh, huge, delicious sandwiches! I will forever crave the trio and that toasty bread. Yummmm. You can't be in The Hill and not try this out.

I discovered Gioia's late in life and find myself making up for lost time by eating there almost every time I am in the neighborhood. It used to be that if I was going to the "hill" for lunch, where should I go and what will I eat,? Now I go to Gioia's and there is no question about what I am ordering! Okay, so what exactly is that small little shop across from Berra park that is Gioia's? Gioia's is a small family run deli that specializes in a salami cotto that they refer to as their Hot Salami. The hot salami runs about 4 inches in diameter and is cooked to juicy perfection. While all of the sandwiches on the menu are good, the hot salami is a must have! When ordering a hot salami you have simple but important choices... white or wheat bread? 6" or 9"? What kind of cheese? What toppings would you like on it? I keep my simple and follow the lead of the man behind the counter Al, for me 9" on White with pepper cheese, peppers, and spicy brown mustard. This is hands down the best sandwich you will ever have! While the house made roast beef is also great, everyone owes it to them self to try a Gioia's Hot Salami. (I am always amazed at how many people in town have never been to this sandwich mecca).
(5)Emaline E.
Absolutely tasty! The staff here is amazing, the sandwiches are great, and there is a nice park to eat at right across the street. Whats not to love? Once we showed up, literally 3 minutes before close. The staff not only served us with smiles, but actually talked to us and held conversations with us. They are friendly beyond belief.
(5)Sarah Jane P.
To make it very clear...I'm giving the Hot Salami Sandwich with provel on it the 5 stars. It is not spicy...it is warm. GET IT.
(5)Heather D.
True neighborhood deli at it's best. I've been coming here for years and they never disappoint. Always super fresh ingredients and great, friendly staff. Everything is, of course, made to order but what's awesome, is all the ways that they offer for customization of your sandwich - everything can be made cold or toasted, with garlic cheese bread or with various spreads like muffuletta (olive) spread, or (my fav.) spicy giardineria plus sauteed peppers & onions, and the options just go on... If you're looking for an AMAZING veggie sub, order the Veggie, toasted, on cheese garlic bread with the spicy giardineria spread = truly incredible, you'll thank me, I promise! P.S. Don't forget to check out the "Secret Menu" online, for some local favorites.

Good old fashion Italian deli. We went today for lunch, it was my partners first time. We loved it. We had a Hot Salami and Italian Trio. The line was long when we entered, we took our number and were amazed at how fast the line moved. The ladies of Gioia's know how to give good customer service and make a quality sandwich fast. They've got Billy Goat Chips, which are a perfect side to a huge deli sandwich.
(4)Jason Y.
Hit this place up for the 2nd time in 5 months. Both times it's been great. I got the meatball sandwich. Home made meatballs seasoned with some fresh herbs and topped with a nice red sauce. I Had it topped with black olives, banana peppers and japs. Could only eat 1/2 and snacked on the other half over the next 2 days in my hotel room. A bag of Billy Goat Chips and a cream soda made an excellent lunch at we rolled into tow.
(5)Marty M.
This was my first time here and quite possibly could be the best sandwich that I've ever eaten. Seriously outrageous and the staff was great!
(5)amy c.
This is another place that doesn't live up to the hype. I read all these great reviews so I went expecting sandwich greatness. In reality it was little better than say jimmy johns or any other generic sandwich place. For the prices they charge, I expected better. The hot salami was just okay. I though it was pretty bland. They were very stingy with the toppings so only certain bites had any mustard or peppers on it. Same with the meatball sub. Only enough meatballs for a 3 inch sandwiches so when its a 6 inch roll it makes for for a lot of bites with nothing but bread and sauce. Not cool Mrs. Gioia.
(3)Sara B.
Went in, asked what I should get and the lady behind the counter made me a Hot salami sandwich with provel and the works. For someone who doesn't like that much meat, it was tasty. Got the smaller sandwich and it was still too big. The tortilinni salad is amazing and the cookies the perfect size! A little peice of true Italian, go figure it is on "the hill"
(4)Bill B.
OMG Yummyyy Salamiiii!
(5)Liz G.
Move over toasted ravioli, a Gioia's hot salami sandwich is St. Louis's true food superstar. The fresh Italian bread with the warm thick slices of salami is like nothing else. Of course you have to add in hot pepper cheese, onion, lettuce and mayo for the perfect sandwich. They have other sandwiches and I've been told the roast beef is good, but my lips have never known another sandwich at Gioia's other than the salami. The ladies at the deli counter are always quick and friendly, even on a busy Saturday afternoon. It's small inside but there is some seating. They offer cookies, chips and bottles sodas to go along with your sandwich - the total package! If you've never been you're really missing out - give the salami a try. I wish they were open later in the evenings or on Sunday's, but nothing's ever perfect.
(5)Andrew W.
Hot salami! Hot anything to give you some hot heartburn later! :)
(4)Joe B.
The taste, nay, the mere smell of the divine deli products finely crafted here encapsulates the finest of what The Hill has to offer and the neighborhood character of Gioia's keeps the flavor of a historic, urban, Italian neighborhood alive and thriving. t's a little hidden and easy to miss, but I want to emphasize that Gioia's is NOT to be missed. I went there on a lazy Saturday afternoon and the line was nearly out the door. No matter, the line moved quickly through such a small space. Before long, the prize will be yours. Every city has "fancy" Italian restaurants, many of them raise questions of authenticity. No such questions are raised by Gioia's.
(4)Justin S.
The hot salami was absolutely, positively, melt in your mouth like butter over popcorn delicious! Also got the trio sandwich and it was good too! Oh yeah, homemade iced brownie was a winner too! Looking forward to going back soon and trying some more! As for my wife and I, one sandwich really would have been enough to share so if your tum tum is less than grandiose, maybe share with a friend! I think they said that they sell 9000 pounds of the hot salami a year.... holy cannoli!!
(4)William C.
This time I tried the Berra Park sandwich with spicy mustard. This is an excellent balance of Italian meats and cheese. It really can't be compared to the previously reviewed Dagget as they are two different types of sandwiches. However, I like both so much there will be a difficult decision the next time I go back.
(5)Chris Z.
Gioia's specializes in hot salami sandwiches, but there are plenty of others to choose from. Today I had the Italian Trio. It was good, plenty of meats, but a tad light on the veggies. I do like how the salami is sliced thick and is a bit spicy. The place can get a hectic as you are served with the 'take-a-number' system and everyone seems to congregate at the counter. There are a few tables in the place, but not enough to count on getting one. Berra park is across the street so on a nice day you could enjoy your meal there. Overall, I like Gioia's but to me, it's not as good as Adriana's.
(3)Rick M.
The Berra Park special modified by changing the roast beef to mortadella was phenomenal. They should call it the "Yogi"!
(4)Erika F.
My boyfriend and I were on our way out of town and wanted to pick up some sandwiches for the road. He suggested our usual, Blues City Deli, but I suggested we try somewhere new, Gioia's. I ran into Gioia's at around 11:30 a.m. on a Friday and was immediately intimidated. They menu is big and you have about a million options (meat, bread, cheese, condiments, sauces....). You take a number and order at the counter. Everyone looked very busy and quite serious, I didn't think they would take too kindly to my unfamiliarity to the menu. There was a group of maybe 5 people in front of me who said they were from Atlanta and always stop at Gioia's when they are in the area. That seemed like a pretty good sign to me. After waiting a few minutes for my turn, I stepped up to counter and stated, "I have never been here before, what do you recommend?" I was completely surprised when the woman helping me offered me a sample and recommended her favorite sandwiches to me. All with a smile! I ended up ordering almost exactly what she recommended, the hot salami with pepperjack, spicy mustard and pepperocinis on white and the NY Philly on wheat. The sandwiches were huge. I especially liked the hot salami, the salami was so juicy and the pepperjack got all melty. Yum. My boyfriend was not a big fan, but he liked the NY Philly. While the sandwiches were great, the service is what is going to keep me coming back. Angel, the woman helping me was so kind and patient and really very funny. They also have Billy Goat Chips, Dad's Cookies, and a wide variety of sodas and teas, which I am a big fan of.
(4)Kat V.
Love this place! The roast beef sandwich was great! But, not with mayo. Dunno if it was the hormones, but mayo made the sandwich not taste good. The bread was fantastic! The roast beef itself was juicy & quite good. The Italian ice was a bit too tart for me. It was a huge helping of lemon ice. Yeah, not for me. Can't wait for the gelato.
(4)Stew D. B.
If you're visiting 'The Hill' (or if you live here like I do), do yourself a favor and stop by Gioia's for lunch. There isn't a more unique and delicious experience anywhere on The Hill, or in the city for that matter. The Hot Salami is the star, but don't sleep on New York Philly Beef or the Rich Boy. The fresh potato salad is also great if you want something different than chips.
(5)Iffat B.
Unfortunately, I don't eat pork and couldn't try the Salami sandwich they are famous for, but I did try their turkey sandwich. The turkey sandwich was ok, but dipped in the au jus sauce it actually pretty damn good. With that being said, it still wasn't something I'd drive all the way to the HIll to eat and this place probably is not the greatest place for people who don't eat pork.....
(3)Chris H.
One of the things I miss most about St. Louis is the hot salami at Gioia's. Best sandwich in town. I still come here whenever I get back to town. Such a great place and great people.
(5)John M.
My kinda place. No frills, nothing fancy, neighborhood people. The sandwiches are amazing, I prefer the trio and homemade salami and roast beef. For St. Louis, the sandwiches aren't cheap, but they are worth it. Mangia, mangia!!!!!!!!!!!
(4)Stephanie S.
The day: April 1st. I was on vacation AND it was my first day back to eating meat (after a month of veganism!). I knew I wanted something big, juicy, and filled with TONS of meat (keep the dirty jokes to yourself!) Then I remembered that I had a Groupon for Gioia's! Everyone I talked to about this cute little deli on the hill had nothing but AMAZING things to say about it. And just about everyone that raved about it told me I had to try the hot salami. Let's get one thing out in the open: I HATE salami. I think the idea of it is absolutely disgusting. I hate those little white pockets of fat that pepper the stuff. Blech. But to be fair, the only experience I had ever had with salami was with the oscar mayer packaged stuff from when I was a kid. So I decided to go for the gusto and try Gioia's hot salami. I walked into the cute little shop and was immediately greeted. I ordered the hot salami on wheat with pepperjack cheese (if you're crazy, you could also go with provel), hot mustard, and pepperocinis. It was wrapped up in a jiffy and I was on my way. I got in the car and put the sandwich in my lap and realized it was warm! I took a huge bite and immediately fell in love. This is not oscar mayer salami, folks. This was like no other salami I've ever tasted -- it practically melted in my mouth! And the bread -- THE BREAD!! It was so freaking soft I could cry. All of the flavors; the cheese, the peppers, the mustard, the salami -- they all came together in the most brilliant way. It was like magic. I could go on and on about how good this sandwich was, but I'll stop. Just go to Gioia's and order their hot salami. This is something you must experience for yourself!
(5)Ruby L.
Talk about Italian comfort food - we had the famous hot salami italian sub and it was so good. It was like an italian meatloaf sandwich. The bread was light, the meat was piled high and the extras only added to the goodness. My only wish is that the salami had a little more spicyness, but nothing was lost on goodness. True Italian "the hill" experience!
(4)Joshua C.
Went to the Hill to try the famous Hot Salami sandwich! And... I'm guessing that it is an acquired taste. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the sandwich to a degree, and they loaded this thing with a ton of meat. BUT, overall, it didn't "wow" me, which I was expecting from all the previous reviews I had read (and from the near $8 price of the sandwich). I would definitely like to go back and try one of their beef sandwiches, maybe I'm just not a salami fan? Gioia's Deli, I will be back, and hopefully I can give better than a 3-star rating on an update. If you like salami and you like it hot, go to Gioai's Deli. If not, hold off until I get a chance to taste some of their other sandwiches!
(3)Philip R.
This is my third favorite place in St. Louis for lunch. The other two being Blues City and Bogarts. However, this place has the best sandwich I've ever had (sorry Portillos, Al's, and other Chicago beef joints). The hot salami on garlic cheese bread is unbelievable. My mouth is watering while I am writing this, and I just ate. It's so good that it cannot accurately be described. Go get one tomorrow.
(5)Joseph P.
It's 8:30 on a Monday morning and yet all I can think about is a Gioia's Hot Salami. Unfortunately, I won't be able to have one today since they will be closed by the time I'm off work and they are too far to get for lunch today. But I will tell you this, there isn't a day I'm off work, or a Saturday where Gioa's and their delicious Hot Salami isn't on the menu or strongly being considered. The fact that they are only open weekdays and Saturdays in the afternoon is a major bummer to me...but I get it. It's an old school deli and that's the way it is. It just means that every visit to Gioia's is one to be savored. The uber-friendly staff, the old time regulars milling about, and this picturesque corner of Macklind and Daggett on the Hill all make for the perfect sandwich experience.
(4)Emily W.
I can sum up why you should go to Gioia's Deli in two words: Hot Salami. Mama Campisis patrons might have stumbled upon this place with it being next door, making it probably the best smelling block in St. Louis. Cute wall murals grace this little brick building and give it a charm that definitely won me over. Earning the title "Famous" the Hot Salami will warm your heart, soul, and belly.
(4)Meghan M.
Hot salami and Roast beef with Provel on Wheat. WOWZA! You get up to the counter, order and find a seat. Pretty good outdoor seating for when it's nice out. There are also parks pretty close that would be a good spot to chow down on one of these unbelievable sandwiches. For about $10 you can get a sandwich chips and a drink, which is a little high compared to others but it is worth it to me. They also have other side options I will eventually stake out like potato salad, tortellini salad and chili. I have had intense cravings for this sandwich before it is so good and I can't get my self to have anything else but the hot salami and with or without roast beef-either way is still damn tasty.
(4)Colin F.
Mark this one under something else I dont understand. My roommate and it looks like everyone else loves this place. I found it kind of flavorless. My girlfriend went on friday and picked up a hot salami sandwich and a NY philly. The philly was the best. It was decently flavorful but possibly a little dry. I would get it again but maybe sans creme cheese. The hot salami is another story. I understand it is not like hard salami. It is not dried and cured. The texture and color of it kind of freaked me out. I didn't find it had a lot of flavor like its dried and cured cousin. It just tasted like the mustard, pepperocini, and onions the lady recommended we get on it. My girlfriend raved about how nice everyone was there, especially a girl named Angel. She really liked everything, so maybe its just me...
(2)Andrew D.
This place brings back memories as well as makes new ones everyday. Not to duplicate others reviews but if you're looking for classic Italian Deli's, you can't go wrong here. So many varieties capped by a great list of specials really makes this place perfect. Its more of a take out location as there really isn't much seating, but Forest Park is just a couple of minutes away so you can take a picnic and not be disappointed. SALAMI, SALAMI, SALAMI, that is all I have to say. They bring in all the best baked bread and ingredients from the area. Honestly, it should be a stop on the tour of south city sandwiches, which is something we should think about starting. Followed shortly by Southwest Deli, Mom's, and finishing at Blues City.
(4)Matt M.
There's so many great authentic Italian deli's on the Hill, and I feel kinda bad for reviewing them all so highly! If you like spicy salami, come to Giolia's (you can even order some of their meats, like their chorizo, to go). Hell, if you're not a fan, stop by anyway. Unlike some of the smaller deli's around St. Louis, they accept credit/debit cards, which is a huge plus in my book. I ordered the Italian Trio sandwich, which was three types of italian meat, lettuce, peppers, tomato, pickle, vinegar and oil, all toasted on italian bread with pepper jack cheese. Are you salivating yet? Granted, you won't end up paying $5 for a footlong sub. As much as I love my Subway (which is A LOT), Gioia's is the real deal.
(5)Jeff R.
Ok. More bun than meat. Didnt dip my hot roast beef. Dry. No seating. Tortellini salad really oily, potato salad good. Hope next visit is better.
(2)Kyle P.
Only place I have had a hot salami sandwich.....used to work in Stl and made a trip hear on way to airport once a week. One of the best and most unique sandwiches I have ever had
(5)Andrew M.
You want to treat yourself to an authentic Italian Deli experience? Look up. Does the sign say Gioia's Deli? No? It says Amighetti 's? LEAVE IMMEDIATELY! Go here instead. NOW! I, despite being a resident of the Hill for more than a decade, had not been to Gioia's that often. It had always been an excellent place to go for a poor boy sandwich in my mind- the fresh bread, meat and cheese made certain of that. But there really had been nothing to distinguish it from other Hill eateries. I had always heard of their 'hot salami' but had never tried it. Until now. Imagine salami you'd buy at the grocery store- sliced thinly, but still having a very chewy, dense texture. Now imagine this being heated up in an oven and put on bread. You have just imagined MY MISCONCEPTION OF 'HOT SALAMI' that I had UNFORTUNATELY HELD for these many, many WASTED years. Gioia's is SO very confident in their Hot Salami sandwiches that they offer patrons a sample. Practically an end of a whole sandwich. The salami was thick. REALLY thick, but it was so warm, juicy and tender I could scarcely believe it was salami. It MELTED in my mouth. I almost didn't have to chew. But I did. Because I WANTED to. It was a revelation. It was almost by divine imperative that I had to order my own hot salami sandwich- for which I was able to choose from a wide spectrum of cheeses, toppings and sauces to personalize it. The attendants, being extremely friendly and ever helpful, suggested hot mustard- which I went with and was EXTREMELY thankful to yield to their suggestion. The bread is fresh and soft. The meat, as mentioned earlier, is so fresh and delicious it's practically criminal to call it 'lunch meat,' as were the rest of their toppings. I will say the service is a little slow, but I imagine that's because of the low server-to-customer ratio and the fact that the ingredients on each sandwich must be custom assembled independently... nothing is prepackaged into baggies of mystery meat. My hot salami sandwich was only $7 dollars- basically the standard rate for a typical poorboy sandwich. I didn't know you could buy manna so cheaply.

Had one of their amazing sandwiches and the lasagna. Service was also very friendly. I appreciate it when people are patient with my inability to make up my mind. Even if Jacki isn't. Was a really great mid-point to a spectacular day.

As for the best sandwich in St. Louis, I can not say anymore, I have made claims that the Mom's Special, the Benton Park Po' boy, and even an Adriana's sammy are the best around.... But there is something to be said for a sandwich that is ordered on GARLIC CHEESE BREAD. Annoying caps aside, I love garlic and cheese, and bread as well, so why wouldn't I go for all three together, and THEN throw some meaty hot salami in there. Come before or after the rush (or on a snow day) get some salt and sour chips and a regular Dr. Pepper, and enjoy the ride. I get mine with provel cheese (if you have to ask) some mustard and mayo, and pickles lettuce and tomato. You could do it plain, (plain being hot salami, garlic, cheese, bread, cheese) or whatever your style is, but get it hot. So as for the best sandwich in St. Louis, I can't really say... what do you think Emerico?

The BEST sandwiches in St. Louis. Whether you are a visitor to St. Lou or a local, get yourself to The Hill and find out what all the fuss is about. They do not have a sign in their window stating "Voted Best Sandwich in St. Louis" for nothing! Get there, get in line and enjoy.

First time here and I definitely would like to go back. I came because of a groupon and to me, as soon as I walked in I could tell the food would be good. Simple, old fashioned, get the job done kind of place. Very friendly service, quick attention and high quality food. I ordered the salsicia sandwich on wheat with provel cheese and it was definitely the best sandwich I've had in a long time. I might have liked to have one more piece of salsicia but otherwise, lots of sauce but just right. I ate every bite. I took a couple bites of the lasagna and save the rest for later. Family owned forever, this place keeps the plastic forks behind the counter, napkins in a basket and styrofoam cups stacked next to the soda machine. I don't make it to the Hill very often but I may start getting there more.

Best rich boy around. They use volpi salami, provel cheese and the bread is always fresh. Huge amount of meat every time!!!! I love this place

I went here today to grab some lunch, I'd heard such good things about their salami special, and it was wonderful. Nicely warmed and cheesy, I had it with pepper cheese. VERY GOOD!!! When I went to pay I was charged 50 cents because I used a debit card, which kind of sucks, but otherwise the place is great. I don't think you can even compare it to Moms or La Grands, it really is in a class of it's own.

Kick-ass sandwiches. The combo comes with quite a variety of meats (ham, turkey, mortadella, genovo salami and beef), on wheat or white homemade bread (and I prefer to add only lettuce/tomato/onions with mustard). The hot Trio sandwich (Mortadella, Salami and Genovo) is equally delicious. These are hearty sandwiches, very filling and easily sharable. Leave room for store-made gelato for dessert (pistacchio for me of course). They do have Lasagna, meatball sandwiches, salads and more, but really, why drift away from their specialties.

I love this place!! The roast beef sandwich is my favorite. It is the closest thing that I can get in St. Louis to an Italian beef sandwich from Al's in Chicago. Gioia's is famous for their hot salami sandwiches, which I find to be just alright, but everyone I know loves them. And I always get a bag of Billy Goat's chips to go with my sandwich. Deliciousness!!!

The Best Sandwich shop in St. Louis. The Hot Salami is something worth dying for, and all of the staff are very friendly. They have a great selction of sandwiches, chips and deserts. You can try all the rest, but you will be back for the best.

Great place to go for a hot salami sandwich. Personally I like the hot salami and hot roast beef. The sandwiches are huge, so bring your appetite
(4)Scott B.
Get the turkey with their oil/vinegar dressing or the chicken salad. Both are good sandwiches, and they should enable you to return to work after lunch and be equally as productive as you were before you arrived. I can't say as much for the hot salami.

Homey little sandwich shop in the heart of Italian St Louis. Definitely a mom & pop feel to it including homemade Saran wrapped brownies. All first time comers are offered a taste of their famous salami, which you should try whether you're having the sandwich or not. Reasonable prices, excellent food, fun atmosphere, busy lunchtimes, and overall great place. Seating is limited though, so be prepared for that.

I am currently on a quest to find the best sandwich in STL, this might be it. Fantastic
(5)Paul M.
Without a doubt, the best sandwiches in St Louis. Be prepared to wait if you go during the lunch rush, but between 1:30 and 4 p.m. you can pig out and relax. I bring all of my out of town guests to Gioia's at least once for the Hot Salam! Moto Bella!

Great service and even better food. I'm a lifelong St. Louisan and this is the best sandwich place in town. If you're a carnivore, go to their webslte and order from the secret menu.
(5)Luke M.
Great deli in a great location. The hot salami is the best sandwich on the hill. Limited seating, so don't count on eating there if you come on an especially busy day.
(5)Erin C.
Hot salami sandwich is amazing!! This is my second favorite sandwich place in town (next to Blues City Deli) but for sure the best place on The Hill. I was also with some folks that had the salsiccia sandwich and said it was awesome as well.
(5)Chris G.
Top 3 sandwich shop in Saint Louis - I put it up there with Blues City Deli but not above it. Anything with their giardinara is great. Very good bread, hot salami is excellent, 3-meat trio awesome, turkey is just ok (you don't want to go here for that type of sandwich), and anything with the red sauce on it is just ok too. Hot salami is not spicy hot...just oven hot. Be prepared to wait though - sometimes the lunch lines are out the door. The best bread is their cheese garlic bread...don't miss out on that!

This is a no-frills, small little deli place on the Hill. I got the Gioia's Famous Hot Salami, husband got the Italian Trio with three different salamis on toasted garlic bread. Holy crap. The sandwiches were so huge, but I couldn't stop eating. So I ate the entire thing for lunch and was too full for dinner. I've never seen salami so thick as the hot salamis there. Definitely going back for more!

Out of curiousness, I went here in Gioai's Deli and try eating my lunch here. So as I entered the place, my stomach grumbled because I can smell how good the food was and it's filling the whole place. Then I ordered whatever looks so delicious to me (I had hard time choosing ecause everything looks delicious!) So I got the famous hot salami and wow! Every bite I took felt so heavenly. It's really delicious that I am out of words to describe it! My god. If only I can eat that everyday, I would. I'm recommending GIOA'S DELI if you really want something cheap but still can make you full and satisfied!

There is nothing that can warn you up like Gioia's Hot Salami on fresh baked bread......
(5)Jeff K.
This is the best deli ever. It's completely old school they make your sandwich to order and it alway fantastic. Try the Vess Cream soda with a hot salami. The Italian Trio is just as good. The philly beef is great. The crowd is a great mix of local people.
(5)Chelsea B.
Delicious sandwiches. Friendly staff. Very charming! I know the hot salami is their "thing," but I seriously recommend the beef.
(5)Ted R.
Hot Salami is fantastic, but don't forget about the soup! Make sure you bring some gum, cause ur breath is gonna be kickin!
(4)Christen A.
That hot salami sandwich is the shizzle. Yummy, it was hard to resist the urge to stop here on my way to work everyday.
(5)Jared D.
Great little Italian deli. Huge sandwiches that are well worth the money. Loved their famous hot salami sandwich.

It's not the most inviting place in the world, but I am always willing to try something once. I went in around noonish and the place was packed...not a place to sit. So I figured its got to be good if all these people are here. The girl at the counter asked if I have ever been in before and I told her no. She proceeds to cut off a slice of their homemade hot salami and asks me what I think. AMAZING... I ended up getting the hot salami and a cup of chili. I will definitely be making another trip.
(4)Matt K.
One of my favorite delis on the Hill. Try the hot salami. Never had anything bad here. Even when it's packed the line moves quickly. There is limited indoor seating and some outside. I've always gotten it to go.
(5)Melissa V.
Hot Salami Sandwich had good bread but the salami was neither hot nor spicey. It was cut thick and had a weird consistancy. I'll stick with Blues City Deli.
(2)Rebecca S.
Delicious sandwiches, my favorite place to go for a sandwich in St. Louis! Hot salami and hot roast beef is the best! Pretty quick as well.
(5)Matt C.
old school italian deli on the hill, that has one of the best sandwiches i've ever had anywhere: the italian trio with melted provel on toasted garlic cheese bread. this thing is absolutely amazing. i get it with lettuce, mayo, and pepperoncini. incredible mix of flavors. i make a point to stop here every time i come to St. Louis and hope it's always going to be there

Vegetarians beware. This place is not for you. They are allegedly famous for their hot salami (insert all sexual jokes here). I walked in and they were slow because I'm guessing the lunch rush was over already at 1:30. The girl behind the order counter saw the deer in headlights look on my face and asked me if I had been here before. Answering no, she told me hot salami was what they were known for and then cut me off off a piece of one of their sandwiches. The flavor was great and the meat was warm. I went with Italian Trio. Three meats and either pepper or provel (ugh, not another restaurant serving this shit) cheese topped off with an oil sauce. Very tasty but the flavors were a bit overwhelming for when all I wanted was to try the hot salami. Bad choice on my part not theirs. Why do I have to be so damn greedy with food at times. My coworker had the salsiccia and absolutely loved it and commented about how great the sauce and peppers were on it. The help from the girl was spectacular because you sure aren't going to a deli for service. It's a counter to order and another to pay. One sign of the economic times (or maybe they've done this for a while) is that you have to have $15 in charges to use a card or they will allow you to use it less than that but they charge you $.50 extra. Need a quick lunch and near the hill? This place will work. It's cheap (less than $10 for sandwich, chips, and soda) and the food is pretty good.

Ok, so the place is pretty shabby, there are ridiculously long waits at lunchtime, seating is woefully inadequate, and the service is neither the friendliest nor the quickest ever, but the subs are to die for. The hot salami is sooooo tasty, and their Italian dressing is really different and totally delicious. We always make a point of going to Gioia's when we're in the area.

Exactly what a neighborhood deli should be like - friendly staff, great food, good atmosphere. Went here on a recent visit when our hosts (who lived in St. Louis, but hadn't been before) used their Groupons to take us. Got a roast beef sandwich that was heavenly. Weather was nice, so we loved being able to sit outside, and then let our daughter play on the playground across the street. Line was a bit long, but moved pretty quickly. My husband and his friend were undecided on what to try and the woman at the counter quickly gave them samples of sandwiches to try (they actually decided AGAINST the hot salami in spite of leaning in that direction before). Everyone in our group loved their sandwiches, and the pasta salad was great too. The only complaint from the group? The 6-year-old didn't care for the free (very hard) molasses cookies she was given at the register (and I didn't think they were very good either).

best sandwiches on the hill

I get sandwiches here quite often and they are always good. Good bread can make or break a sandwich and Gioias hits a home run with theirs. We also order for out of town guests when we bring lunch in. Everyone enjoys them!
